Name: Silky Terrier
Personality: Despite its "toy" designation, the silky has "
a true terrier personality," with "
a friendly, joyful temperament," according to the American Kennel Club. The Silky Terrier Club of America (STCA) describes the breed's manner as "
quick, friendly, and responsive" with an "inquisitive nature and joy of life make him an ideal companion." Bonnie Behrmann, National Coordinator of
Silky Terrier Rescue echoes the comments about the terrier personality, calling the silky "a little dog that wants to be in the same room with you, but not necessarily in your lap."
Grooming: The silky's long blue-and-tan coat is a hallmark of the breed and, quite obviously, that long silky coat takes some upkeep. "You have to groom them every now and then or they get a little matted," Behrmann advises. The AKC concurs, maintaining that the silky needs to be "
bathed and brushed on a regular basis."
Common Health Issues: According to a
survey conducted by the STCA, the most common health issues with the breed include cataracts, cancer, allergies, luxating patellas,
hypothyroidism and
hypoglycemia.
